Missouri SQM Connected Program - One Year Loaner

Thank you for your interest in becoming a “Missouri Sky Quality Meter Program” measurement site.

The Missouri Chapter of the International Dark-Sky Association (“IDA Missouri”), in partnership with Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, operates a program that measures sky brightness throughout the state of Missouri.  The SQMs are directed toward a fixed point in the sky to log data for scientific analysis and to develop programs to reduce light pollution.

The program launched in October 2019 with eight SQMs manufactured by Unihedron and continues to expand.

Applications are being accepted to participate in the program. Deployment of SQM's will be determined by funds available, the program's objectives and the following criteria:

  1. Scientific usefulness of the data
  2. Installation site’s ability to perform routine tasks such as changing batteries and retrieving data on a timely basis
  3. Potential for the installation site to implement programs to reduce light pollution
  4. Likelihood that the SQM device will be lost due to theft.

Installation of the devices will be on trial basis not to exceed one year.  If the trial is successful as agreed to by both parties, the installation may be extended to a more permanent basis. The devices will be provided by the Missouri Sky Quality Meter Program at no cost to the participating organization. The devices remain the property of Missouri Sky Quality Meter Program and the installation site will not be held responsible should a device be damaged or stolen.

We respect your privacy and will not share your contact information with anyone except our project team members unless approved by you or your organization.

We would love to hear why you are applying to become a measurement site.

If you are unsure of the best location, give us your best guess and we will help you select the best location available.

The SQM devices can be powered by batteries with no Wi-fi connection.  However, the SQM device can be configured to support electrical and/or wi-fi connections if available.

Let us know of any ideas, comments or questions that you want to share.
